The Salt OrchardMiriam Voss

A widow replants her sister's seaside orchard and picks a fight with the tide. I salted everything I cooked for a week.

Ruth
NightjarTomas Reyes

A detective who refuses to drive, in a city built on stilts. The plot is fine. The city is the point.

Petra
How to Feed a GhostAda Lin

Recipes, grief, and one immovable grandmother. You will cry into the congee chapter. Page 141.

Sam
Little EnginesJune Okafor

Poems short enough to read at the bus stop, heavy enough to make you miss the bus. Start with “Flywheel.”

Special orders

Almost anything, in two days.

Text or email the title. Half a title works. “The blue one about the lighthouse, from that podcast” has worked. We order Monday through Saturday and text you the moment it lands. Usually two days, sometimes one.

Go ahead and check our price against the big river site. We do too. We land within a dollar more often than you'd think, and ours comes with a bookmark and someone who remembers your name.

Gift cards & the nook

Paper gift cards, and one very good chair.

Gift cards live at the counter. Paper, any amount, no expiry, no app to download. If you're buying for a reader you can't decode, take home a blind date with a book instead.

Brown paper, string, three honest words on the wrapper. Twelve dollars. No returns, only forgiveness.

The nook in the back is one armchair, one lamp, and no time limit. Read the first chapter before you commit, we insist on it. If the dog has the chair, he gives it up around eleven.

The store

Ruth, and the dog the store is named for.

Ruth Ellery taught high school English for nineteen years, then spent her savings on four thousand used books and a lease on Quince Street. She opened in 2013 with her shepherd mix, Chapter, whose left ear has been folded over since puppyhood, like a page someone means to come back to. The name was sitting right there.

Ruth reads two books a week and remembers what you bought last winter. Chapter handles morale, greets the delivery man like a returning soldier, and sleeps through story hour in the middle of the rug.

“A bookstore is a person who reads too much, plus shelves. The shelves are the easy part.”
